Abstract

In thissurveyarticle,wereviewglyph-basedvisualizationtechniquesthathavebeenexploitedwhen visualizingspatialmultivariatemedicaldata.Toclassifythesetechniques,wederiveataxonomyof glyph propertiesthatisbasedonclassificationconceptsestablishedininformationvisualization. Consideringboththeglyphvisualizationaswellastheinteractiontechniquesthatareemployedto generateorexploretheglyphvisualization,weareabletoclassifyglyphtechniquesintotwomain groups: thosesupportingpre-attentiveandthosesupportingattentiveprocessing.Withrespecttothis classification,wereviewglyph-basedtechniquesdescribedinthemedicalvisualizationliterature. Based ontheoutcomeoftheliteraturereview,weproposedesignguidelinesforglyphvisualizationsin the medicaldomain.
